If you’re having problems with the audio on your Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and it’s over a year old, there’s a good chance it has “audio IC disease” or “loop disease” and needs repaired. Take a look at our audio IC disease article for more details!
The Important Points
- “Audio IC disease” (or “loop disease”) typically causes the following issues:-
- Audio problems while making calls
- Siri can’t hear you
- Greyed-out loudspeaker icon and voice memos.
- iPhone takes much longer to boot than normal. (Stuck at “Apple logo”).
- More likely to happen as iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus gets older.
- Widely believed to be result of phone twisting due to bad design, in turn breaking connections between motherboard and Audio IC.
- Generally, some audio functions will still work, but not all.
- Apple does not officially recogise this problem at the time of writing (Sep 2018).
- Repair St Andrews can repair it- contact us for further details.
Introduction
Whether or not you own an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, you might have heard that copy screens– designed and made from scratch by companies entirely independent of Apple- have been stopped working by the iOS 11.3 update. Read More
The Important Points
- Apple received bad publicity when users realised iOS was intentionally slowing down older iPhones with ageing batteries.
- Models involved are the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus.
- Worn-out batteries struggle to meet the higher demands of iPhone CPUs and GPUs running at top speed. This increases the chance of crashes.
- Apple’s workaround was to spread out workload and cut down on other uses of power when iOS detects the battery isn’t up to the job.
- The only real solution is battery replacement.
- Apple offers this, but as of January 2018 there’s a shortage of replacement batteries until March or April at the earliest.
- At Disc Depot St Andrews, we can usually fit replacement batteries for recent iPhone models the same day! Read More

Unofficial and Fake Cables- How They Can Damage iPhones and iPads
This article is intended to provide a brief overview of a very common cause of Tristar IC (charging chip) problems and failure- specifically the use of unofficial or fake cables, and the reasons they are a problem.
This is a relatively in-depth article. If you’re not interested in the detail and simply want your iPhone 8 or iPhone X repaired, contact us for further details, phone 01334 47 88 66 or visit our shop at 1 City Road, St Andrews. We also have a Dundee branch.
Introduction
Apple’s September 2017 keynote was the inaugural event for their newly-opened Steve Jobs Theater, a new 1000-seat auditorium at the Apple campus. As the leaks had suggested, there were indeed some interesting announcements, including the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, a next generation Apple Watch, a 4K Apple TV and last but not least, iOS 11.
Since this article focuses on repair issues, we’ll be concentrating on the two models most likely to concern us, the iPhone 8 (and iPhone 8 Plus) and the iPhone X.
Introduction
We get a lot of people asking us for the cost of a screen repair for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 Plus phones. Unfortunately- for reasons we’ll go into later- replacement AMOLED display units are very expensive, and this has to be reflected in the price we charge.
On hearing this, many people understandably point out that it’s only the glass that’s damaged- not the AMOLED screen itself- and want to know whether we can replace that alone.
Unfortunately, the bad news is that we can’t. We’ve written this article to explain why.
You might not have considered this before, but when it comes to iPhone screen repairs, did you know there are different types of replacement screens? One is a genuine Apple original, and the other is a compatible (but often inferior) “copy”. Read More
The Essential Points
- “Original” screens are those containing LCDs manufactured for Apple. “Copy” screens are compatible replacements entirely designed and manufactured by third-party companies not associated with Apple.
- We always advise our customers to go for the original screen. The difference in price is generally small, but the quality is far better.
