Swollen Laptop Batteries? Get Them Fixed ASAP!
Do you have a Windows, Linux or Apple laptop with a bulging case? Or perhaps it’s suffered from liquid damage? Read on to find out why you shouldn’t ignore these issues!
We received an Apple MacBook Pro in for repair recently. It had suffered water damage and wasn’t turning on, so we opened it up to see what it was like inside. What we actually saw was this…
To cut a long story short- this was not good!
Ignoring the expected laptop dust*, the most obvious problem is that the batteries are rather swollen(!) Swelling is always a sign of damage to Li-Ion laptop batteries and is caused by a build-up of gas inside the battery case. (Here, it’s almost certainly a direct or indirect result of the liquid damage, but battery swelling can also result from overheating or physical damage or trauma to the laptop.)
Swollen and bulging batteries are dangerous in general. However, in this bad a state, they’re at serious risk of both exploding and catching fire and should be safely removed as quickly as possible by someone who knows what they’re doing. Fortunately, our technicians knew what to do and were able to remove and dispose of them before things got any worse!
If your laptop case appears to be “bulging”, this is usually a sign that the batteries inside are swollen. Not only is this hazardous, but the (often significant) pressure exerted can bend or crush other components inside, causing damage to them. The sooner they’re replaced, the less likely this is to happen.

* The dust seen here has nothing to do with the water damage- it’s just the usual buildup from the fans inside a laptop. However, excessive dust can still jam fans or block air flow and cause overheating, so it’s best removed if the laptop is already open.
